Wednesday 24th April: Arthur Lea's Bootleg Brass

Another sublime evening last Tuesday thanks to the Corrie Dick Quartet! This week we move to Wednesday for something a little different from one of the SE Collective's very own...

Arthur Lea has been hammering honky tonks since his hands could first reach the keys. Somewhere between the London jazz scene and the American delta, he sings a retro brand of rhythm n blues, happening hooks, and southern soul. Bootleg Brass is a brand new bag, bringing blues n roots originals home to The Amersham with a funky, horn heavy line-up. New Orleans in tight jeans - warm harmony, fat beats & other treats, with beautiful blowing improv from a cracking line-up...

Pat Levett - drums
Oren Marshall - tuba
Jerome Harper - trombone
Jon Shenoy - reeds
Rob Greenwood – trumpet
Frances Lea – vocals
Arthur Lea - piano, vocals, tenor horn

Tuesday 16th April: The Corrie Dick Quartet

After a great gig last week from visiting artist Alex Merritt and his quartet, the SE Collective is proud to present the talents of the Corrie Dick Quartet!

“Up and Coming Artist 2011” in the Scottish Jazz Awards, London-based Corrie leads a band of highly creative young improvisers, performing a mixture of original, melody driven material and standards with lots of freedom.

Corrie Dick - Drums/Compositions
Sam Rapley - Tenor Saxophone
Matt Robinson - Piano
Chris Hyson - Double Bass

“Corrie is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.”
Will Vinson (New York Saxophonist)

"Dick is a thoughtful, responsive drummer who doesn’t hog the leader’s limelight, preferring to support the musicians in front of him and let the music breathe, and there’s a strong sense of melody as well as a growing individuality in his compositions."
Rob Adams (The Herald)

Tuesday the 9th of April: The Alex Merritt Quartet

Alex Merritt – Tenor Saxophone
John Turville – Piano
Sam Lasserson – Bass
Jeff Williams – Drums

The Amersham Arms enjoyed yet another cracking double bill this week with new music from Andre Canniere's Freeway following on from Alam Nathoo and Tom Hewson – who presented music from the new duo EP Aubade. For those of you who missed it, the EP is available to download and comes highly recommended:

Next Tuesday the SECollective are very pleased to be welcoming back Alex Merritt’s terrific quartet; featuring three of London’s finest young improvisers alongside US drumming icon Jeff Williams.

The Alex Merritt Quartet play all original compositions by Alex drawing upon diverse influences. Prominent in the mix is the influence of contemporary classical music – composers such as Bartok, Messiaen and Ligeti. Another big influence on the music is the carnatic music of southern India as well as jazz influences from the Tristano school, Jimmy Giuffre and many others. It’s an interesting hybrid music which leads to a very exciting band dynamic and a fresh springboard for improvisation.

You can check out some live recordings of Alex via his website:

Looking forward to seeing you down at the Amersham!

2.4.13 Andre Canniere's Freeway + Nathoo/Hewson

Alam Nathoo/Tom Hewson Duo

Alam Nathoo - Tenor Saxophone
Tom Hewson - Piano

Nathoo and Hewson have been working together as a duo amongst other contexts such as Nathoo's quintet and trio Identity Parade (with drummer Peter Ibbetson) for over half a decade now, and present music from their EP 'Aubade' for the first time officially since its release last year. Describing the project in their own words:

'For us this recording tries to evoke the brooding optimism that accompanies certain points of transition - night into morning, late winter (when we wrote and recorded this music) into spring. and composition into improvisation. Over the last 5 years playing together we have always focused on exploring the formal and textural possibilites that the duo format offers, whether through our own compositions or standards. The flexibility to bounce ideas off each other and choose new paths as we play is what has always driven our personal dynamic, and we hope our engagement in this concept comes across on what will hopefully be one of many recording projects.'

What? I hear you say! All that talent and incredible music in one place on a Tuesday night? Too right we say!

Tues 26 March : Matt Ridley 4tet feat. Jason Yarde

The MATT RIDLEY QUARTET feat. JASON YARDE

Formed in 2011, the Matt Ridley trio first appeared at the SE Collective at Amersham arms. 18 months later, the band return, augmented by celebrated composer and saxophonist Jason Yarde.
The core of tonight’s band comprises the award-winning pianist John Turville, the highly musical (not to mention fiercely virtuosic) drumming talents of George Hart, with Ridley at the helm. The trio soars through the leaders' genre-bending improvisational territory with wit and aplomb, no matter if the musical terrain is tricksy or serene, creating a unique sound world unlike any working unit in London today.  As a bassist, Ridley is solid to the core, yet light on his fingers across the fretboard as he navigates his own compositions using them as a vehicle for expression as a soloist, in which he succeeds greatly.
Special guest saxophonist and globally recognized composer Jason Yarde perfectly assimilates the feeling of Ridley's compositions, singing the melodies from the depths of his soul, and improvising in a way that few saxophonists working in jazz could conceive.
"Sounds fuck'n great !!!! inspiring !!" - Gilad Atzmon
"Matt Ridley is the latest bass player to strongly emerge on the London scene as a prominent composer and bandleader.  Both his playing and compositions contain engaging rhythmic elements that draw on Middle Eastern & Indian influences, whilst being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. He also delivers his music message with sincere clarity; I look forward to hearing what he does next!" -Jim Hart, World-Renowned Vibraphonist
"Matt Ridley's trio project is full of spirited energy and clearly etched interplay, sometimes augmented by Jason Yarde on sax. Their music is certainly modern, yet appealing to older ears attuned to acoustic jazz and its long exploratory history. Matt's compositions take in counterpoint, odd metres, ethnic influences, and generally exult in the complexity of today's improvised music. This is clearly the work of someone eager and able to say something original in the jazz tradition. Incidentally, Matt has been a member of my UK quartet for six years."
-Darius Brubeck (Jazz Pianist, and son of the legendary Dave Brubeck

MATT RIDLEY PROFILE: Since graduating from Trinity College of Music in 2005, Matt has established himself as one of the leading young bassists on the UK jazz scene.
Playing bass guitar at age 15, Ridley knew after a matter of months that music would be his career. After completing his A levels he went on to study at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, where he graduated with Distinction and was awarded the 'Bass Guitar Student of the Year' award, followed by studying for a Bmus (hons) in Jazz Studies at Trinity College of Music. Under the tutelage of Steve Watts and Corin Long, he began studying double bass and jazz in earnest, and graduated in 2005, winning the Trinity College of Music 'Friends in New York' award for excellence, and also garnering the Archer's Scholarship for big band.

Since then he has made a name for himself on the London jazz scene, working with a veritable who's who of UK jazz, including:
Art Themen, Alan Barnes, Alan Skidmore, Benn Clatworthy, Ben Davis, Brandon Allen, Bobby Wellins, Clark Tracey, David Newton, Dave O'Higgins, Don Weller, Gene Calderazzo, Gareth Lockrane, Gilad Atzmon, Henry Lowther, Iain Ballamy, Ivo Neame, Jean Toussaint, Jim Mullen, Jim Hart, Kit Downes, Mark Nightingale, Pete King, Tommy Whittle, Steve Waterman, Nikki Iles

As of late, Ridley performs in all of Mike Garrick's many ensembles, including the 'Lyric Ensemble' with Nette Robinson, Nikki Iles and Tony Woods, The Michael Garrick Jazz Orchestra, and the 'MJQ Celebration', featuring Jim Hart, Barry Green and Steve Brown. He has also recorded and toured extensively with Darius Brubeck, son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Moreover, Matt enjoys success in other musical spheres, forging long-lasting musical partnerships with virtuoso oud player Attab Haddad, and BBC award-winning folk songsmith Sam Carter.  He is a founder member of the SE London Jazz Collective.

19.3.13 - Martin Kolarides Trio & Olie Brice Qrt ft Alex Bonney & Jeff Williams

This week at the SE Collective we have a fabulous double bill for you...

Martin Kolarides Trio:
An exciting sonic reworking of the Organ Trio format, this ensemble lead by Guitarist
Martin Kolarides, with Arthur Lea - Organ and Pete Ibbetson - Drums, takes its inspiration from the other worldly atmospherics of Bill Frisell and Brian Eno whilst fusing the infectious rythmic stylings of such diverse sources as west African Soukous/Lingala through to a touch classic Wayne Krantz wrapped up in memorable compositions and lyrical improvising.

Olie Brice Quartet:
Olie Brice – double bass
Alex Bonney – trumpet / pocket trumpet
Mark Hanslip – tenor saxophone
Jeff Williams – drums

One of the UK’s most respected young musicians on the improvised music scene, Brice leads this stellar quartet performing his own compositions which act as springboards for spontaneous improvising and composing in the moment.

“Brice makes the entire body of his bass sing. He has the ability to deliver a fractal line that is as purposeful as any by the great jazz bassists, but to do so within an entirely abstract setting”
     – Brian Morton, Point of Departure

“Consistently inspired”
     – The Wire

12.3.13 Martin Speake / Jeff Williams / Barry Green

Martin Speake Trio, featuring Jeff Williams and special guest, Barry Green.

Martin Speake
Citing Lee Konitz, Charlie Parker, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Ornette Coleman, Steve Coleman, Rabih Abou Khalil, and Paul Motian as major influences, Martin Speake has developed a personal musical voice that expresses a deep understanding of the history and language of Jazz with an individuality as an improviser, that is intelligent, melodic, cool, complex, direct, beautiful and profound. Born in Barnet, North London in 1958, Martin was inspired to take up the saxophone at the age of 16. From 1977-81, he studied Classical Saxophone at Trinity College of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious Dame Ruth Railton prize for woodwind playing. He first came to public attention as a founder member of the award winning Saxophone Quartet 'Itchy Fingers' during the height of the UK's so called '80's Jazz Revival' when a host of young musicians including Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, Django Bates, Iain Ballamy and the big bands of the Jazz Warriors and Loose Tubes were acclaimed as the leaders of an emerging generation of UK jazz talent.
With Itchy Fingers, Martin toured Europe, South America, Africa, Britain and the USA, and recorded two albums. In 1988, he left the group to develop his own projects, and establish himself as a composer and improviser. His studies at Canada’s renowned Banff Centre for the Arts in 1990, under the artistic direction of Steve Coleman, and alongside peers that included keyboard players Andy Milne and Ethan Iverson, and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, proved to be pivotal and catalytic in Martin’s subsequent development as a creative musician.
Martin is as comfortable and fluent playing personal interpretations of the music of Charlie Parker with his quartet, or with free improvising drummer Mark Saunders, in a duet with Ethan Iverson of the Bad Plus, or with Indian musicians Dharambir Singh and Sarvar Sabri. In 1999 he received the Peter Whittingham Award to help fund a tour of the UK with The Martin Speake Group. In 2000 he was commissioned to compose music for an international project featuring American drummer Paul Motian, Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson and English bassist Mick Hutton. This group toured in May of that year with funding from the Arts Council of England and toured again in Autumn 2001. Their first cd Change of Heart was released on ECM in April 2006. 2004 saw the release of three different cds including The Exploring Standards Trio (33 Records) with bassist Mick Hutton and drummer Tom Skinner, a ballad album My Ideal (Basho Records) with American pianist Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), and The Journey (Black Box) with Indian musicians Dharambir Singh and Sarvar Sabri. Autumn 2004 he toured with Sam Rivers in his UK big band on a Contemporary Music Network tour. In 2005 he celebrated the music of Charlie Parker with a newly formed group and touring throughout the country promoting a cd release of the project.

He started his own record label Pumpkin in 2007 and has released four cds so far. SPARK is a duo with drummer/percussionist Mark Sanders, TWO NOT ONE,  a duo with guitarist Colin Oxley and two albums with with Barry Green, Dave Green and Jeff Williams entitled GENERATIONS and LIVE AT RIVERHOUSE. ALWAYS A FIRST TIME is the next release in Autumn 2012 featuring Mike Outram and Jeff Williams. Martin is a committed, inspiring, and sought after jazz educator and currently teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College of Music, National Youth Jazz Collective and Trinity International Jazz Summer School. In the past he has taught at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Middlesex University and for a number of years was External Examiner at Birmingham Conservatoire.

“Speake is a strikingly talented improviser with a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration.”  - Encyclopedia of Popular Music

'Martin Speake is one of the most interesting and rewarding alto saxophonists now playing jazz on any continent.' Thomas Conrad - Jazz Times

'Speake's playing can be as enigmatic as his writing. The lyricism and subtlety of both his written and improvised melodies sometimes unfold so gradually that one needs to take a mental step back to absorb it all'   John Kelman   All About Jazz

Jeff Williams is originally from Oberlin, Ohio, Jeff spent much of his youth in New York, where his mother was pursuing a career as a jazz vocalist. Her immersion in the city’s jazz scene provided Jeff with first-hand exposure to the music, mentorship from icons like Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins and opportunities for sitting in with greats like Clark Terry. Following Berklee College of Music and study with Alan Dawson, Jeff began his professional career with Stan Getz (1972-74, 1988).  He was a member of Dave Liebman’s prolific group, Lookout Farm (1973-76), has had a long association with Lee Konitz and was chosen by Joe Lovano for his first major tours as a leader (1992-94).  Jeff has also performed and/or recorded with John Abercrombie, Cedar Walton, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer, Michel Petrucciani, Randy Brecker, Paul Bley, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Tony Malaby, Dave Holland, Tom Harrell and many others.  Since establishing a second home in London in 2005 Jeff has appeared in the UK with Phil Robson, Martin Speake, Nikki Iles, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Hans Koller and more. Jeff's latest CD, Another Time, was selected as 2011 CD of the Year by UK Jazz Radio, a TOP 10 CD by All About Jazz and received a four star review in Downbeat. His quartet, featuring Duane Eubanks, John O'Gallagher and John Hébert, toured the UK in May 2012.

In a career that has spanned more than 40 years, drummer Jeff Williams has honed a sound that seamlessly blends a sinewy, propulsive rhythmic sense with a masterful appreciation of space and atmosphere. Matthew Miller, The New York City Jazz Record

Drummer Jeff Williams has and plays impeccable time, but he paints around the lines and shifts patterns to accent and highlight what's happening in the music at any given moment. He's the rare drummer who understands and conceptualizes time as something beyond the standard "spang-a-lang" status quo
Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Barry Green
"The pianist can effortlessly sustain a graceful Bill Evans-like lyrical swing, but alsomassages the ideas of the others. His contemporary references give him a broad sweep,
and he has much to do with this set's freedom from bop-standard rigidities...The pianist
wraps a light tracery around Speake against ringing cymbal and thumping keynotes on
Jitterbug Waltz, and then plays a pungent solo..."
John Fordham,The Guardian

‘Green’s piano provided some real interaction with the vocals, sometimes prodding,
sometimes holding back, and often inserting deft little phrases that decorated
the lyrics with taste and sensitivity.’
Alyn Shipton, The Times

“That Green possesses such wide ranging interests will surprise no-one who has caught
him with the various band leaders to whose groups he contributes his sparkling
but cogent piano work”
Chris Parker,Vortex

“…the trio tracks show off Green’s virtuosity. His work can be both intricate and
assertive, and is constantly inventive. A CD which generously repays repeated listening”
Pete Martin, Jazz UK

“…the one who really shone was pianist Barry Green. Watching his imagination unfurl,
was an engaging experience and turned out to be the keenest musical pleasure of the
evening” – Ivan Hewett, Daily Telgraph

Tuesday 19th February: HOLLER

SECollective presents:
Tuesday 19th February - HOLLER

Just scan the list of musicians that members of Holler regularly sit beside and you have a who's-who of UK jazz royalty. Not only that, they have all played at our night with their own ensembles, including Empirical and the Gareth Locrane Big Band. This one is not to be missed...

Ryan Trebilcock – double bass, compositions
George Crowley – clarinet, tenor saxophone
Lewis Wright – vibraphone
Hannes Riepler – electric guitar
Josh Morrison- drums

Formed by bassist Ryan Trebilcock in late 2008, Holler combines some of the hottest young talent from the London scene. Trebilcock's hypnotic, labyrinthine originals create a compelling sound-world full of intense grooves and raw, assertive improvising.
